Some are navigating life in neighborhoods ruled by gangs, doing their best to stay out of danger. Others work for the gangs, tasked with dangerous jobs such as spying on rival groups or the gory work of disposing of bodies. Meanwhile, across the country, many more children are going hungry, according to UNICEF, as food prices spike amid the insecurity.

Justice Arthur Engoron speaks during the trial of former President Donald Trump for Trump's civil fraud trial at New York State Supreme Court on Tuesday. Shannon Stapleton/Pool/Getty ImagesJudge Arthur Engoron, who is overseeing the New York attorney general’s civil case against Donald Trump, said Tuesday that the trial itself is not the venue for Trump’s attorneys to contest what he’s already ruled on. Leaving court Monday, Trump incorrectly claimed that the judge had agreed that 80% of the attorney general’s case was thrown out because of the statute of limitations. It’s one of several allegations contained in the attorney general’s civil case against Trump, but it could lead to stiff penalties for his business. The attorney general’s office is seeking to bar Trump from doing business in New York.

The argument, filed as a third-party brief in proceedings where Clark and Meadows seek to move the Georgia state charges to federal court, musters support for keeping the entire case in state court. A judge is set to consider arguments from Meadows and potentially Clark on Monday on moving the case, after both have asked to do so. "The conduct charged here by the Fulton County District Attorney— interference by Mark Meadows and Jeffrey Clark with the 2020 presidential election in Georgia in order to aid Donald Trump’s candidacy—bore no connection to any duty of Mr. Meadows’s, Mr. Clark’s, or Mr. Trump’s office. "Removal would be perverse, as this prosecution arises from interference with state-government operations and seeks to vindicate Georgia’s voice in a federal election, the very contest from which federal authority flows." Trump could ask for similar protection as president but has not formally asked the court to consider moving his case at this time.

Wagner private military company founder and financier Yevgeny Prigozhin has called for the entire Russian society to be mobilized, saying people are ready to contribute to Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine. "It is not only the mobilized who should be mobilized, those who go to the front, but all the society should be mobilized,” Prigozhin said in an audio posted on his Telegram channel, in reaction to Russia’s new electronic conscription bill. Unlike Prigozhin, the Russian government continues to deny it is waging a war in Ukraine, referring to the conflict as a "special military operation." The Wagner leader criticized Russian officials who fled the country with their wealth and said the whole "system" needs to be shaken. "The system requires global sanitation and a reduction in the number of participants in this bureaucratic community."

Nikita Chibrin says he still remembers his fellow Russian soldiers running away after allegedly raping two Ukrainian women during their deployment northwest of Kyiv in March. He deserted from the Russian military in September and fled to Europe via Belarus and Kazakhstan. Chibrin’s military documents, seen by CNN, show his commander was Azatbek Omurbekov, the officer in charge of the 64th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade. Omurbekov, known as the “Butcher of Bucha” is under sanctions by the European Union and the United Kingdom. The Kremlin has denied any involvement in the mass killings while reiterating baseless claims that the images of civilian bodies were fake.
